This applies inside De Pere city limits. ZIP codes and mailing addresses can cross city lines, and nearby towns, villages, and counties have their own rules. HOA rules and leases can be stricter.
Before you apply
- Register the proposed location with Wisconsin DATCP (Wis. Stat. 95.51) and include proof with your application.
- Renters must include written consent from the record title owner of the property.
- Apply online or through the Clerk-Treasurer's office before keeping chickens.
Key rules
- One permit allowed per R-1 Single-Family or R-2 Single- and Two-Family residential parcel (De Pere Municipal Code Sec. 86-5).
- Keeping chickens reduces the 4-dog/cat limit so that the total number of dogs, cats, and chickens does not exceed 6 animals (and never more than 4 chickens).
- Coops must provide at least 4 square feet per chicken, be moisture-resistant, and be raised off the ground or placed on concrete, patio block, or gravel; attached runs cannot exceed 40 square feet.
- Coops must be in the rear yard, outside all required setbacks, and at least 25 feet from any principal residential structure on an adjacent lot.
- Chickens must stay in the coop or attached run at all times (no free-ranging). On-site slaughter and selling eggs or chicks are prohibited.
