This applies inside Kenosha city limits. ZIP codes and mailing addresses can cross city lines, and nearby towns, villages, and counties have their own rules. HOA rules and leases can be stricter.
Before you apply
- Property must be zoned single-family residential; renters need the landlord's signed consent.
- Attach a diagram showing property lines, the enclosure, and all structures within 100 feet.
- Apply for the Wisconsin livestock premises registry; the license will not be issued until registration is verified.
- List owners and adult tenants of all directly or diagonally abutting properties, including across an alley.
- The application goes to the Public Safety and Welfare Committee; contact your alderperson at least 7 days before review.
Key rules
- Coops must be in the rear yard and at least 25 feet from any home on an adjacent lot.
- Provide at least 16 square feet of floor space per chicken, with at least 3 square feet per chicken under a watertight cover. Maximum coop height is 6 feet.
- Coops over 120 square feet need a building permit; electricity needs an electrical permit and cannot be supplied by extension cords.
- No selling chickens, eggs, or manure from the property; no commercial breeding.
- Chickens stay in the coop or enclosure and may not trespass on neighboring properties. Unwanted chickens cannot be released or taken to Animal Control.
