This applies inside Duluth city limits. ZIP codes and mailing addresses can cross city lines, and nearby towns, villages, and counties have their own rules. HOA rules and leases can be stricter.
Before you apply
- Apply online through the City Clerk's ePlace portal prior to acquiring chickens (unless located in a Suburban district exempt under Sec. 50-51).
- Pass a site inspection and approval by Duluth Animal Control.
- Renew the license annually for the January 1 to December 31 license period.
Key rules
- Governed by Duluth Legislative Code Chapter 6, Article VII (Keeping of Chickens, Sec. 6-79).
- Up to 5 hens are allowed; roosters and on-site slaughtering are prohibited.
- Chickens must be housed in a covered, predator-proof, well-ventilated coop (at least 4 sq ft per bird) with an attached fenced run (at least 10 sq ft per bird) in the rear or side yard.
- Coops and runs must meet city property-line and neighboring-dwelling setback rules and be maintained in a clean, sanitary condition.
