This applies inside Janesville city limits. ZIP codes and mailing addresses can cross city lines, and nearby towns, villages, and counties have their own rules. HOA rules and leases can be stricter.

Before you apply

  • Get the permit before keeping birds or building a coop or run. The permit year runs January 1 to December 31.
  • Submit an accurately scaled drawing of the coop and run location, distances to lot lines and the nearest neighboring home, and coop and run dimensions.
  • Include proof of Wisconsin DATCP premises registration.
  • If you do not own the property, the owner must sign the application, and the signature must be notarized.

Key rules

  • One shared coop with an attached run, entirely in the rear yard.
  • New coops need at least 3 square feet per chicken and cannot exceed 24 square feet; coop and run together cannot be taller than 6 feet.
  • Run cannot exceed 50 square feet or 1% of the rear yard, whichever is greater, and never more than 200 square feet.
  • Coop and run must be at least 10 feet from the rear wall of your home, 10 feet from property lines, and 18 feet from any home on adjacent property.
  • Birds must be in the coop from sunset to sunrise. Food scraps may only be fed inside the coop. Slaughter only at a licensed facility.
  • Report any unusual illness or death to Wisconsin DATCP within 24 hours.
